Escamas - Scalework
The craft of fish-scale art in the Azores grew from the islands’ close connection to the sea and the tradition of reusing available materials. Fish scales were cleaned, dried, and carefully arranged into delicate flowers, leaves, and decorative objects. Once a popular folk craft, it reflects the resourcefulness and creativity of Azorean island communities and remains a distinctive part of their traditional handicraft heritage.
